Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) simply is the observation of your nerve function during your surgical procedure. Any nerve signal deviations are reported immediately, allowing your surgeon to incorporate this information into his or her decision-making process.
IONM is performed by a trained and certified technologist using state-of-the-art computerized equipment specifically designed to perform nerve monitoring. Tiny, non-invasive electrodes are placed over nerve and/or muscle areas of your body and then connected to the IONM equipment. The computer gently stimulates the nerves in one area of your body and records the signals that are generated in another area, continuously telling your monitorist and your surgeon how fast your nerves are carrying signals and how strong those signals are during the course of your procedure.
IONM has already been used for years during many types of surgical procedures. Today, the use of IONM is so widespread that it is becoming the standard of care for many surgeries. Your surgeon may request that it be performed during your procedure for a variety of reasons. The data we gather may be utilized by the surgical team for reasons such as: finding the optimum position for your body to rest in during surgery; identifying and/or testing the functionality of particular neurological structures; and ensuring that you achieve the best possible results from your surgery, to name a few. You should discuss any concerns that you may have with your surgeon.
IONM is a painless, non-invasive procedure with little to no risk. The specific type of monitoring that your surgeon chooses to use will determine what risks, if any, exist. The incidence of such risks has been reported to be EXTREMELY LOW. However, as with any procedure, the risks versus the benefits must be carefully considered. You should discuss any concerns that you may have with your surgeon.
Because your surgeon has deemed IONM to be a necessary component of your surgery, these fees will be submitted to your health insurance carrier. In some circumstances, the hospital may have a contractual obligation to pay for this service. All IONM services will be billed out of network with the exception of the following carriers: Viant, Department of Labor, Multiplan, Medicare, ACPN. Prior to your surgery, you will be introduced to your Accurate Neuromonitoring technologist in the operating room holding area. There, he or she will answer any questions you may have before asking you to sign a consent for our services. He or she will then place tiny, non-invasive electrodes on the surface of your skin over nerves and/or muscles that will be monitored during the surgical procedure. Usually, monitoring of the selected nerves and muscle areas begins shortly after you are anesthetized and data is collected virtually continuously throughout the duration of the surgery. Your surgeon will incorporate the data we collect into his or her decision-making process. Monitoring is concluded when we are dismissed by your surgeon, which is usually shortly before you ‘wake-up’ from anesthesia.
